The answer to this is determined by the type of anesthesia chosen, your overall nutritional status, and how well you follow instructions for healing.
After the procedure, you will experience some discomfort such as mild pain and swelling of the cheek for two days. The recovery period may vary between days to a week, and during this time we will give you a list of activities that you should stop during the downtime of 24 to 37 days.
If you have local anesthesia or nitrous gas, you will be able to recover faster than if you had anesthesia. Your body has to detoxify the anesthesia.
If you eat foods such as ice cream, jello, kool-aid, and popsicles, you won’t recover quickly. Your body wants nutrients: protein, fat and carbohydrates. Smoothies are a better choice because you can add protein powder, vegetables, and avocados to them.
It’s important to follow all the protocols your dentist gives you during recovery. For example, you should use a straw to drink beverages. You should keep your head elevated. And you shouldn’t brush your teeth too soon after surgery.
Here are some guidelines below. You will receive more specific guidelines from me after the surgery is scheduled.
1. Wisdom teeth removal is an outpatient procedure. You will go home after the surgery has been performed. You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery.
2. Will you need a bone graft? Ask us during your consultation. Bone grafts prevent the sensitivity to cold on the remaining molars.
3. Are there any medications I should not take before the surgery? Ask us this question, as the answer varies depending on the medication.
4. What will you eat after surgery? Ask your dentist for this information before the procedure so that you can have food in the refrigerator to eat when hungry. You won’t feel like cooking for at least four days after the procedure.
Here’s a list of things to expect:
1. When your wisdom teeth are removed, the bone underneath it will resorb. This will end up making your face look thinner.
2. Your second molars may be sensitive to cold foods or drinks. Using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help.
3. Small folds may form in the gum line. This occurs when the bone remodels.
4. You may feel pain when you open your mouth or your jaw may click. This is because the TMJ – the temporomandibular joint – may have been stressed during the surgery when your mouth was open wide for too long.
