Initially, the doctor will move the gums away from the patient’s tooth so he can access the tooth roots and bone. The roots are then cleaned. The defects and small cracks in the bone will be sealed up with the bone grafts.
A physical barrier will be used to protect the grafts during recovery. The barrier also prevents the gums from growing into the cracks in the bone. Then, the gums return to their normal position and sutured closed. The doctor may also use a bandage, known as a periodontal pack or dressing, to protect the area. Over the following months, the body will grow new bone and soft tissues which will attach to the grafts and keep the tooth securely in place.
Bone grafts are used to provide strength and stability to the area involved. The goal is to strengthen the area so much that the screws and additional surgeries are not needed later.
You can expect a few days of soreness. There’s very minimal discomfort postoperatively.
During a sinus lift, a person’s upper jaw bone is prepared for a dental implant by using bone grafts to make the bone stronger. This makes the upper jawbone very sturdy and creates a space between the sinus and upper jawbone where the titanium post of the implant will be installed.
