Scaling and Root Planing is a deep cleaning technique that removes the plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line.
You might not know it but your dental hygienist only gets the plaque and tartar that is closest to the surface. They never go down deep enough to remove it all.
A dentist uses hand scalers and ultrasonic instruments in the scaling and root planing process. The procedure can be performed on your entire mouth in a single visit or divided into several different appointments, whereby only one or two quadrants of your mouth is scaled and root planed. Your dentist can tell you the advantages and disadvantages of each of the options.
Here’s how the procedure is done:
One of the problems of gum disease is that it eventually affects the bone that supports the teeth. Usually, bacteria grow in the pockets around the tooth.
Osseous or Gum Surgery is a process by which the affected bone is reshaped to reduce the depth of the pockets where bacteria grow. This technique is often recommended when other treatments such as scaling and root planing have failed to repair the pocket.
Osseous or Gum surgery involves the following steps:
The surgery will cause some pain afterward since an incision has been made and stitching has been done. Your dentist will prescribe antibiotics and painkillers, and also recommend some precautions such as mild brushing for a couple of days, what kinds of food to eat, and so on. You’ll get a complete list of instructions for your after-surgery care.
Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), as the name suggests is a laser-assisted surgical process, which cleans out the infections below the gum line and in the bacteria-infected pocket.
In one 2007 study, LANAP had impressive results – it successfully reduced pocket depths and allowed regeneration of connective tissue to grow and fill in the areas damaged by the bacteria. Laser essentially vaporizes the bacteria causing the bone loss. Laser is known for its effects on stimulating the regeneration of collagen tissue and it worked here in the application on the teeth, too.
The LANAP is one of the advanced dentist’s successful strategies that make a big difference in reversing these gum diseases. Make sure you ask your dentist about LANAP if you have Gum diseases.
